Gale announces updates to Literature Criticism Online!

Gale is pleased to announce a new release of Literature Criticism Online, which brings a variety of new features to this digitized collection of Gale's major criticism. The ten individual, award-winning Gale series that comprise Literature Criticism Online present a range of modern and historical views on authors and their works across regions, eras and genres. Imagine centuries of analysis - the scholarly and popular commentary from broadsheets, pamphlets, encyclopedias, books and periodicals - delivered in an easy format that matches the exact look and feel of the print originals.

In response to customer feedback, the following new features are now live to current users of the database:
* Browse Topics - access 600+ topical entries easily through our new alpha-browse feature, with new entries added regularly.
* Updated indexing in "Browse Works" and "Browse Authors" - deep cross-referencing found in Gale's Literary Index is now integrated within Literature Criticism Online.
* Titles Discussed - works entries include links to all relevant pages that discuss a related title within any given essay - extreme cross-referencing at work.
* Updated language - intuitive "Inside this Entry" and "Inside this Volume" links provide easily understood directions for exploring volumes and entries.
* Updated design to Print/View PDFs - page limits reduce the amount of loading time (and printer paper) for patrons who want more than just a two-page spread.
* Hit-Term Highlighting and Relevant Pages now available for Keyword searches - originally active in full-text searches, this has now been applied to keyword searches, too.
* New design for navigating to Relevant Pages - find your search terms easily by navigating directly to relevant pages with the click of a mouse.
* Cleaner InfoMarks for document Source Citations - links are more readily recognized in bibliographies, coursepacks, social bookmarking sites and more.

Some additional basic changes in Literature Criticism Online will have a MAJOR effect on how relevancy and currency are perceived within the database. By changing the Basic Search default index from "Full-text" to "Keyword" and changing the default sort from "Publication Date Ascending" to "Publication Date Descending", users will find the most up-to-date entries and relevant keyword search results at their fingertips, without changing anything other than their search terms!

Coming this Fall, Literature Criticism Online will become cross-searchable with two other major digitization efforts -- Something About the Author and the Dictionary of Literary Biography. These major sets are considered the premier publications in literary reference, bringing unsurpassed volumes of biographical content, images and commentary on all the major authors covered in Literature Criticism Online and beyond.

Expanding JSTOR Shibboleth Support

We are happy to let you know that JSTOR is now offering institutional access via Shibboleth to members of the UK Federation. We invite all JSTOR-participating institutions in the UK Federation to contact techsupport@jstor.org to begin the setup process.

Included below are more details about Shibboleth access, as well as information about other remote access options for JSTOR. Of course, if you have any questions, or need any further information from us, please don't hesitate to contact JSTOR Tech Support (techsupport@jstor.org).

  • The JSTOR SP EntityId is https://www.jstor.org/shibboleth
  • In order for us to enable your Shibboleth access to JSTOR, we will need confirmation from you of your institution's Shibboleth Identity Provider ID (IdP). Once this information is in our records, your Attribute Authority can authorize users into JSTOR by asserting the eduperson entitlement attribute with a value of urn:mace:dir:entitlement:common-lib-terms. This entitlement value should be set for those users who qualify under the terms of the JSTOR license agreement. Generally, this includes students and staff (active and retired), but it can also include "library walk-ins", if those users have some way of authenticating using Shibboleth.
  • We will set up your Shibboleth access on a test server and ask you to test your Shibboleth access there before going live. We will send you further details of this once we hear back from you.

In addition to the UK Federation, JSTOR is also a member of the InCommon Federation. We look forward to supporting Shibboleth access for other federations, as well. If you are a member of a regional federation, please contact techsupport@jstor.org for more information.

OpenAthens

OpenAthens institutions who are using Eduserv as their identity provider will be able to access JSTOR in exactly the same way as before. No further action should be necessary.

PDF Incompatibility with Mac Preview

We have recently become aware that certain versions of Mac Preview are incompatible with the newest generation of JSTOR PDFs. For some users, this means that only the cover page is displaying. Other users have reported that the downloaded article appears to be missing the first portion of the article—it begins somewhere after the first 10 pages of the article. The article is in fact intact and complete, but some pages are not displayed properly. We are working to fix this and plan to continue to support the use of Preview with JSTOR PDFs. We apologize for the problems that this is causing for Mac users.

For now, the quickest workaround is to download the latest free copy of Adobe Reader, available on the Adobe web site:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

Once Adobe Reader is downloaded, please check to make sure that the default PDF viewer is set to Adobe Reader rather than the original PDF viewer installed on your Mac.

The default viewer for PDF documents in Mac OS X is Preview. To change the file association for PDF files:

  • Select any PDF file and choose File > Get Info.
  • Choose the application that you want to open PDF files from the Open With menu.
  • Click Change All, and then click Continue.

You will also want to make sure that the popup blocker is turned off for the JSTOR site. The new PDF files are set to open in a new window and popup blockers may affect this.

Encyclopedia of 20th Century Technology from Routledge

Comprised of essays arranged alphabetically from Absorbent Materials to X-Rays in Diagnostic Medicine, most on individual objects, artifacts, techniques, and products, this is an up-to-date reference work for all those involved in teaching or researching the history of twentieth-century technology, as well as the serious general reader. The core of each of the main entries is a technical description, within a historical narrative, of about 1,000 words plus illustrations and further reading. There are also about 30 longer survey entries that address broad questions of technological systems, such as the context in which the various technologies were developed, discussions of any controversies and schools of thought, comparisons between different political and economics systems, and the various ways in which different nations have attempted to make and apply science and technology policies.
