Accessible Archives Releases Parts I and II of the South Carolina Gazette

Malvern, PA (December 5, 2007) - Accessible Archives, Inc., a publisher of electronic full-text searchable historical databases, has announced the online availability of the South Carolina Gazette, 1732-1775. This new release features full XML and image availability.

Charles Town (renamed Charleston in 1783) was the social, political and economic center of South Carolina throughout the colonial and antebellum periods, and served as the state capital until 1790. The South Carolina Gazette, South Carolinas first successful newspaper, was begun in 1732 under Thomas Whitemarsh in Charles Town, and soon became an important source of local, regional, national and international news. Whitemarsh died in the fall of 1733 and publication was suspended for several months. The paper was reestablished in 1734 and saw a number of publishers until the release of its final issue in December, 1775.

The collection contains a wealth of information on Colonial/Early American history and genealogy, and provides an accurate depiction of life in South Carolina and America during the years prior to independence. Part I (1732-1741) currently is available; Part II (1742-1751) is expected to be mounted by year-end. Multiple sections will be released each year until completion.

Introducing the collection Rob Nagy, Accessible Archives Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing, said, We anticipated the release of the initial portions of the South Carolina Gazette for some time, but wanted to wait until the enhancements to our revamped website were in place. These have allowed us to initiate XML tagging for the entire
collection, along with a full complement of images. Were very excited at the direction in which these system improvements are taking us.

Reference Universe

Reference Universe is now available on the USC E-Resources page, both in Quick links and on the A-Z database list. More information about this resource are below and at http://paratext.com/ru_intro.htm.

**Reference Universe Content*

There are currently analytics (back of the book indexes, article titles for print; article links for e-books) to over 11,000 works now in your Reference Universe service. It will be updated quarterly, with the addition of approximately 300+ new titles each quarter. This includes both current publications from major and minor publishers, but also the completion of back-file titles from 1985-forward.

**Maximizing Access and Linking**

Many Reference Universe libraries find that the core value of reference universe, beyond peering deeply into their print reference works in a way your library catalog cannot, is the ability to link seamlessly from article and even index level citations in Reference Universe directly to the article in online e-book repositories like Gale's Virtual Reference Library, Oxford
Reference Online, ABC-CLIO, Sage, Annual Reviews, Routledge and many others.

Based on our working extensively with Gale, this addition into our system will permit your library to link seamlessly from Reference Universe citations (anywhere you see an "E" in a blue circle) to the Gale article, bypassing their front end. This is a major enhancement that truly unifies your awareness and use of both e and print titles.

Accessing online content in Oxford Reference Online, ABC-CLIO, and other e-titles from Reference Universe does not require any additional information from you. Our system matches ISBNs from our records to your catalog to indicate which titles you own, and links to those repositories are embedded in Reference Universe citations.

Portico Supports First Trigger Event

/Graft: Organ and Cell Transplantation/, published by SAGE Publications from January 2001 to March 2003, will be removed from SAGE's online offering at the end of this year creating the first ever trigger event for the Portico archive and Portico's participating publishers and
libraries.

Because SAGE Publications, a leading international publisher of electronic media, journals and books, has ensured that /Graft/ is preserved in the Portico archive and because /Graft/ will not be offered by any other commercial online source, Portico will "light up" this portion of the Portico archive and provide access to literature that otherwise would be lost to the scholarly community. Through this first trigger event Portico demonstrates how publishers, archives, and libraries can cooperatively provide a permanent archive of scholarly literature published in electronic form and avoid a permanent gap in the scholarly record.

On December 3, 2007, Portico will make /Graft/ available to its library participants via the Portico website and access via SAGE will end December 31, 2007. In the coming days, Portico will forward to its library participants instructions for accessing /Graft/.

This book contains over 400 entries, covering all aspects of American poetry in the twentieth century. Entries fall into three main categories: poet entries (Conrad Aiken to Louis Zukofsky); entries on individual works, which offer closer explication of the most
resonant poems in the 20th-century canon; and topical entries, which offer analyses of a given period of literary production, school, thematically constructed category, or other verse tradition that historically has been in dialogue with the poetry of the United States.
