JSTOR/ARTstor Search Prototype

www.jstor.org

JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization responsible for preserving and extending access as broadly as possible to an archive of important scholarly journals.

Dear JSTOR Participant,

JSTOR and ARTstor would like to announce the availability of a prototype which aims to facilitate searching across the archived content in JSTOR and the image content in ARTstor. The JSTOR/ARTstor Search Prototype is available in the JSTOR Sandbox (http://sandbox.jstor.org), an area of the JSTOR website used to showcase possible new features and to gather feedback to help direct future development of JSTOR.

The JSTOR/ARTstor Search Prototype allows JSTOR users to conduct a basic search across three types of content: JSTOR article text, JSTOR image caption text, and ARTstor image metadata. After conducting a search, users are presented with search results separated into three tabs:
The "Articles" tab lists JSTOR search results for matches in journal article text.
The "Images from Articles" tab shows results of a JSTOR caption search, and includes thumbnails of each article page containing an image with a keyword match in the image caption.*
The "ARTstor Images" tab lists results of matches for the keyword or phrase in ARTstor image metadata. The search is performed on the creator, title, and subject terms of the metadata.

Users at sites that participate in both JSTOR and ARTstor will be able to view thumbnails of ARTstor images, and may link directly from JSTOR to content in ARTstor. Users at institutions which are not currently ARTstor participating sites may view ARTstor image metadata in the search results but will not see the image thumbnails.

The main goal of featuring prototypes in the JSTOR Sandbox is to assess their value to JSTOR users. We encourage you to try the prototypes and send us your feedback via the "Comment on this feature" link on any Sandbox page.

Best regards,

Heather Maun

USC Content Connexion On-click not working

USC Content Connection (aka Serials Solutions OpenURL resolver, Article Linker) is showing authentication errors when you try to access Gale/Thompson Resources and Proquest Resources. This problem has been reported to Serials Solutions. This appears to be a problem only with the One-click feature that takes users from the citation to the article bypassing the Serials Solutions results page. At the top of the page you will notice text that says:
"Missing article? Need more sources? Get additional resources related to this citation
http://zb5lh7ed7a.search.serialssolutions.com/?sid=FirstSearch%3AEconLit&genre=article&issn=0038-4038&atitle=Does%20Crime%20Pay%3F%20A%20Classroom%20Demonstration%20of%20Monitoring%20and%20Enforcement&title=Southern%20Economic%20Journal&volume=72&issue=4&spage=1016&epage=25&date=2006-04&aulast=Anderson&aufirst=Lisa&auinitm=R&id=doi%3A&pid=%3Caccession%20number%3E0860050%3C%2Faccession%20number%3E%3Cfssessid%3Efsapp1-59010-esnnv6qy-j1crqp%3C%2Ffssessid%3E%3Cedition%3E%3C%2Fedition%3E&url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Ffirstsearch.oclc.org%3AEconLit&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&req_id=%3Csessionid%3Efsapp1-59010-esnnv6qy-j1crqp%3C%2Fsessionid%3E&rfe_dat=%3Caccessionnumber%3E0860050%3C%2Faccessionnumber%3E&rft_id=urn%3AISSN%3A0038-4038&rft.aulast=Anderson&rft.aufirst=Lisa&rft.auinitm=R&rft.atitle=Does%20Crime%20Pay%3F%20A%20Classroom%20Demonstration%20of%20Monitoring%20and%20Enforcement&rft.jtitle=Southern%20Economic%20Journal&rft.date=2006-04&rft.volume=72&rft.issue=4&rft.spage=1016&rft.epage=25&rft.issn=0038-4038&rft.genre=article&SS_PostParamDict=disableOneClick."

If you click on the link in this text, you will get the results page. The link works perfectly from there. We are working with Serials Solutions to fix this problem. If you noticeproblems with other resources, please let me know. Thanks.

WebFeat ProQuest problems

It's been noticed that there seems to be problems with certain databases in WebFeat with the "USC Content Connection" button. The one that appears to be consistent across all databases and all resources are for the Prquest family of products. If a Proquest database is where the full text of an article resides and you click on the USC Content Connection link on the WebFeat results page, you will receive an authentication cookie error. This has been reported to WebFeat. In the meantime, you should select the "View" button instead and then use the USC Content Connection from there. This appears to be a WebFeat problem. The USC Content Connection link should work on all other resources.

When you find holdings discrepancies for electronic resources among our various databases and catalogs, please report them to Lana Litvan, litvan@usc.edu.

The complete archive of the Royal Society journals

OVER 340 YEARS OF LANDMARK SCIENCE AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR THE FIRST TIME

The complete archive of the Royal Society journals, including some of the most significant scientific papers ever published since 1665, is to be made freely available digitally for the first time today for a two month period.

The archive contains seminal research papers including accounts of Michael Faraday’s groundbreaking series of electrical experiments, Isaac Newton’s invention of the reflecting telescope, and the first research paper published by Stephen Hawking.

The Society’s online collection, which until now only extended back to 1997, contains every paper published in the Royal Society journals from the first ever peer-reviewed scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions in 1665, to the most recent additions, Interface and Biology Letters, and articles published online today ahead of print.

Professor Martin Taylor, Vice President of the Royal Society, said: "The Royal Society archive is a unique source of information for practicing scientists, science historians and indeed anyone with an interest in history. The rich, varied and sometimes entertaining archive documents the earliest accounts of the seventeenth century‘s ‘new experimental philosophy’, through which an understanding of the natural world was acquired by experiment and observation. This provided the foundation of the modern scientific method."

The archive provides a record of some key scientific discoveries in the last 340 years, including Halley’s description of ‘his comet’ in 1705, details of the double helix of DNA by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1954 and Edmond Stone’s breakthrough in 1763 that willow bark cured fevers, leading to the discovery of salicylic acid and later the development of aspirin.

Some of the more obscure papers explore rudimentary prototypes of modern day technology. Trials proposed by Robert Boyle in 1665 hypothesize on the possibilities of blood transfusions, pondering "Whether a fierce dog stocked with the blood of a cowardly dog may not become more tame?". A forerunner for ventilators was also discussed in a paper by Robert Hooke in 1667 entitled "An account of an experiment made by Mr. Hook [sic], of preserving animals alive by blowing through their lungs with bellows".

Professor Taylor added: "In addition to being a valuable scientific resource, the journal archives are also a rich historical record documenting a time which is hard to imagine given the knowledge we have today."

The digital archive contains papers documenting the discovery of new planets, the first descriptions of organisms through a microscope, and the first account of photography. Early journal papers contain fascinating descriptions of how Captain James Cook preserved the health of his crew aboard the HMS Endeavour and the astonishment of 18th century Society by the performance of a eight year-old Mozart.

The archive will be freely available online until December 2006 and, following this period, will be available as part of the Royal Society journal subscription packages (see www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/prices). .

Expanding mix of electronic resources

I wanted to bring to your attention some positive developments since the beginning of the academic year in reference to our expanding mix of electronic resources.

Thanks to the Social Science Team's designation of a portion of their new serials fund we now have access to the following EBSCO database:

Communication & Mass Media Complete

Communication & Mass Media Complete like Communication & Mass Media Index, provides the most robust, quality research solution in areas related to communication and mass media. CMMC incorporates the content of CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth encompassing the breadth of the communication discipline. CMMC offers cover-to-cover (core) indexing and abstracts for over 370 journals, and selected (priority) coverage of over 230 more, for a combined coverage of over 600 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for more than 240 journals. Many major journals have indexing, abstracts, PDFs and searchable cited references from their first issues to the present (dating as far back as 1915). CMMC contains a sophisticated Communication Thesaurus and comprehensive reference browsing (i.e. searchable cited references for peer-reviewed journals covered as core). In addition, CMMC features over 3,000 Author Profiles, providing biographical data and bibliographic information, and covering the most prolific, most cited, and most frequently searched for authors in the database.

In addition, EBSCO has provided us with complementary access, including full-text when available, through June 2007 to:

Film & Television Literature Index

We will subscribe for the period after July 2007.

Finally, regarding EBSCO, they have agreed to convert our subscription to GLBT Life [a resource for the world's literature regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transsexual issues] to full-text at no additional cost to USC.

House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, 20th Century [ProQuest] has been added to our holdings for the 19th century. At the moment access is available through 1945. We will be receiving two further installments which will complete the 20th century, starting with coverage to the mid 1970s in November, followed by a final release in Spring 2007.

Journals from Sage Publications

USC is switching to online only for all journals from Sage Publications as of January 2007. However, as part of our participation in a SCELC consortial arrangement we NOW have online, full-text access to 408 peer reviewed journals from Sage, contrasted with the 207 titles we have directly subscribed to (192 main campus and 15 HSC libraries). Thus, we have access to an additional 201 titles not otherwise subscribed to. You can browse all Sage journals by title at http://online.sagepub.com/ [no need to log in to browse titles]. All titles are being added to the e-journals listing in the Electronic Resources pages.

Journals from Taylor & Francis

USC (main campus) is switching to online only for all journals from Taylor & Francis as of January 2007. At this time we are not participating in any package deal for access to non-subscribed titles.

FORTHCOMING SOON:

We are in the process of acquiring online access to, pending license language approval from the Legal Counsel's Office:

INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL STATISTICS (International Monetary Fund)

INFORMED LIBRARIAN ONLINE [This "is a monthly compilation of the most recent tables of contents from over 305 titles - valuable domestic and foreign library and information-related journals, e-journals, magazines, e-magazines, newsletters and e-newsletters. It includes links to all the current journal contents that came out during that month, many of them full-text."] I've had a personal subscription to this for awhile and find it very useful. A site license was very inexpensive.

IEEE Xplore Upgrade

On Saturday 16 September, IEEE will release a major system upgrade to the IEEE Xplore digital library.
As a result of this upgrade, users may experience up to 12 hours of downtime beginning at approximately 9:00 EDT (-5 UTC). IEEE Xplore 2.1.4 will be OpenURL compatible, which provides a standardized syntax for organizing bibliographic metadata and identifiers in a URL and transferring data between information services. Links are enabled between unsubscribed content in IEEE Xplore to a library resolver, leading users to appropriate resources within their institution. With this enhancement, librarians can work with
commercially available link resolver software to fully enable their publication catalog. OpenURL will be provided in these areas:
* Search results
* References
* Brief abstracts
* IEEE Book abstracts
Other features of the IEEE Xplore 2.1.4 upgrade include:
* RefWorks and Bibtex format downloadable citations from IEEE
AbstractPlus records, search results, and tables of contents
* Monthly lists of each periodical's most-downloaded articles
* Watermarked PDF documents, illustrating the value of your library subscription
This release continues the successful launch of IEEE Xplore 2.0 An additional update is planned for release before the end of 2006.

ERMS Enhancement -- Terms of Use Display

Serials Solutions has deployed a new enhancement that displays a Terms of Use link for databases listed on the E-Journal Portal home page. As a response to customer requests, this enhancement adds to the existing Terms of Use links that appear next to journal titles and improves your patrons' experience when using the E-Journal Portal.

The Terms of Use link will be displayed next to any database with an active provider or database-level license that has entries marked for public display. If your library hasn't taken advantage of activating Terms of Use, consider the benefits of displaying Terms of Use on the E-Journal Portal:

Identify how your patrons can use content within specific databases
Gain greater exposure to custom Terms of Use
Conform to content providers' requirements to display information
Below are examples of how database Terms of Use appear on the E-Journal Portal and a display of the database Terms of Use:

E-Journal Portal example
Actual database terms of use
To learn more about how to activate the public display of Terms of Use through the License Manager, please visit http://www.serialssolutions.com/promotion/termsofuse.pdf.

If you have any questions regarding your ERMS implementation or this latest enhancement, please contact us at clients@serialssolutions.com.
