Problem with Blackwell Synergy Open URL linking ...

From Wiley Interscience--

OpenURL links are currently not redirecting at the journal level but instead default to the Wiley InterScience homepage. We are working on this and will have it resolved within a few days.

[This means the Find It @ USC button takes you to the Wiley homepage. You will need to search for the journal title on the left (use "publication title"), then find the volume and issue you need to get to the article]

As of Monday, June 30, 2008, Blackwell journal content—including full-text HTML and PDF versions of articles from current issues, backfiles, and issues published online before print—has been incorporated into Wiley InterScience.

We are working hard to ensure a smooth transition for all customers and users, and thank you for your patience during this time of change. We will update our institutional customers through the Wiley-Blackwell Library Newsletter (sign up now for newsletter e-mail alerts) and through this information page. If you have any additional queries please contact Wiley-Blackwell customer service at interscience.wiley.com/support.

Wiley InterScience now includes Blackwell Journals

Wiley InterScience now includes Blackwell journals

Dear Customer,

We are pleased to report that 1.6 million articles from Blackwell
journals were successfully loaded onto Wiley InterScience over the
weekend and the site went live again this Monday morning.

=================================
=================================

Blackwell journal content has been
incorporated into Wiley InterScience.

Wiley InterScience now features more than:

* 1400 journals
(3 million articles)
* 6000 online books
* 90 reference works
* 12 databases
* 15 Current Protocols
=================================================================

To view the full list of Wiley-Blackwell journals go to
www.interscience.wiley.com. You will see here several new subject
areas which we have added to now reflect the full depth and range of
the Wiley-Blackwell list. Wiley InterScience now includes 1400
journals, 6000 online books, 830 journals with backfiles back to
volume 1, and 90 online reference works spanning the disciplines, from
anthropology to astronomy, Zizek studies to zoonoses. In addition it
includes 12 databases in chemistry and evidence based medicine as well
as 10,000 laboratory protocols for the life sciences. Blackwell
Reference Online, the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology and the
International Communications Encyclopedia continue to be hosted on a
separate site: www.blackwellreference.com.

Please note that there is still some missing content from Blackwell
which we are working through. This includes some issues, articles,
parts of articles (e.g. article loaded in xml but not in PDF) plus
some missing metadata and articles which need to be fixed due to
special character rendering issues. The full list of missing content
which we are working through is listed on our transition site here:
interscience.wiley.com/transition. Updates will be posted here as
items are resolved.

We have redirected most links to their nearest equivalent on Wiley
InterScience. However, we are still working on the OpenURL links to
ensure they resolve direct to the appropriate journal rather than the
main homepage. We will have this in place within a few days.

We have migrated the majority of customer license terms and access
rights from Synergy to InterScience successfully. However, if you do
experience any problems with your access or have any queries, please
contact our Customer Support team who are offering round-the-clock,
round-the-world customer service during this transition period:
interscience.wiley.com/support. You will also see here a Self-Help
service with answers to many frequently asked questions.

If you are not familiar with Wiley InterScience then please use our
online tutorials or sign up for a free online webinar here:
interscience.wiley.com/tutorials.

Thank you to all our customers for your support for Blackwell Synergy
over the last 10 years. You helped to build the site into one which
has been enormously popular with a large international user community
resulting in more than 20 million user sessions and over 8 million PDF
article downloads per month this year. Work is well underway on the
new Wiley-Blackwell online platform which will include many of the
popular features of Synergy as well as InterScience and which we will
be launching in early 2009. More information about this new service
will be provided to you in due course.

Library Trial: Opera in Video

Dear Colleagues,

USC Libraries has a trial subscription to Opera in Video, the newest offering from Alexander Street Press.

Here is their description of the database:
"Opera in Video will contain 250 of the most important opera performances, captured on video through staged productions, interviews, and documentaries. Selections represent the world's best performers, conductors, and opera houses and are based on a work's importance to the operatic canon. This release includes 40 videos, equaling 80 hours."

They have authorized all IP addresses that they have on file for our institution.

The trial lasts until August 9, 2008.
http://opiv.alexanderstreet.com/

There are some great features, including choice of subtitles in five languages, ability to make clips that have their own permanent urls, and the ability to make your own playlists. Please play around with it and give me your feedback if this is something you'd like to see offered in the future. Also, let me know if you're having trouble accessing the database.

Best,
Stephanie

Accessible Archives to Release Additional Units of the Liberator and African-American Newspapers

ACCESSIBLE ARCHIVES TO RELEASE ADDITIONAL UNITS OF THE LIBERATOR
AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS

Malvern, PA (June 12, 2008) Accessible Archives, Inc., a leading publisher of electronic full-text searchable historical databases, has announced the immediate release of Parts IV and V of The Liberator and the upcoming availability of the Part XII Supplement to
African-American Newspapers: The 19th Century, two of its premier collections.

William Lloyd Garrison, one of the most radical of American abolitionists, published the first issue of The Liberator on January 1, 1831 with the motto: Our country is the world our countrymen are mankind. The Liberator quickly became the most influential newspaper in the antebellum antislavery crusade, and was published through December, 1865.

The Accessible Archives full text online version of The Liberator is being released in seven parts. Parts I, II and III covering 1831 1845 have been available previously. The release of Parts IV and V will extend that coverage through 1855. Parts VI and VII, 1856
1865, are expected to be mounted by the end of the summer and will complete the collection.

The addition of the Part XII Supplement to African-American Newspapers: The 19th Century, consists of the remaining available years of the Frederick Douglass Paper. The paper began publication in 1851 and is already mounted through 1855. The supplement provides coverage of the years 1859 1863, and will be available by the end of July. Accessible Archives is attempting to complete the gap of 1856 1858, but has been unable to locate the necessary issues to date.

Accessible Archives has noted a major increase in access to its databases, and is particularly gratified by the growing usage at the secondary school level. One example is the Wilson School District near Reading, PA where history teacher Beth Harbonic assigns a paper on a Civil War topic. Students are required to utilize at least one primary source, and then complete an analysis form of their sources. Beth reports that 85% of her students used the Accessible Archives databases, and recently wrote to the school librarian: Just wanted to tell you that I graded all of the final assessments this weekend and I cant believe how well the students did on the primary sources. So many students used Accessible Archives and found really unique and interesting documents. It was great to see that they actually paid attention and used the resources. I am keeping all of their projects on file, so if we ever need to justify paying for Accessible Archives, just let me know and we can provide the evidence.

About Accessible Archives, Inc.

Founded in 1990, Accessible Archives utilizes computer technology to provide vast quantities of archived historical information previously available only in microformat. Diverse primary source materials reflecting broad views across American history and culture have been assembled into comprehensive databases.Developed by dedicated instructors and students of Americana, these databases allow access to the rich store of materials from leading books and periodicals then current. Accessible Archives will continue to add titles covering important topics and time periods to assist scholars and students at all academic levels.

New WilsonWeb Enhancements!

* RSS feed for new search results. Configure RSS updates via links on the Search Results or Search History pages.

* New "Content Discovery Keys" on Search Results page. Convenient links launch related searches, allow users to narrow results by author, subject, publication year, document type, and database (for multiple-database searches), or select previous searches from the Recent Searches listing.

* Select the language of WilsonWeb navigation buttons. New dropdown menu converts the main buttons from English (the default setting) into Spanish, French, German, Italian, or Portuguese.

* Change the default setting of the Database Selection area to open or closed.

* New "non-peer reviewed" search limiter in periodicals databases lets you retrieve just articles from easy-reading consumer, trade, technical, and scholarly journals, while skipping rigorous peer reviewed articles and journals. Select "non-peer reviewed," "peer-reviewed," or retrieve all relevant articles.

* More interface colors. Make the WilsonWeb interface your own, with blue (the default), red, green or orange themes.

* Article records (single record view) now include the full text of the article (if available). Article records are now an "all-in-one" information source, with complete bibliographic information, links to other relevant articles, links to page images (if available), plus the full text of the article (if available).

Specific WilsonWeb databases have also been improved:

* Preview images in Biography Reference Bank, Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated and Current Biography Illustrated. New thumbnails at the bottom of profiles let you preview all available photos. Click on any to enlarge.

* Automatic citation formatting—a popular feature on WilsonWeb periodicals databases—now comes to Art Museum Image Gallery, Biography Reference Bank, Wilson Biographies, and Current Biography databases. Create bibliographies in just a few clicks, with auto-formatting according to MLA and APA standards.

* Essay and General Literature Index now includes "Library Owns?" holdings links in records for individual book parts (chapters). Click the link (connected to the library's OPAC) to see where you can find the essay collection on the bookshelves.

* View results by component databases in OmniFile's subject thesaurus. OmniFile, a wide-ranging periodicals database made up of diverse Wilson specialty databases, can be searched all-in-one or by any of the component databases. Now searches of the OmniFile subject thesaurus lists subjects all-in-one or by individual component databases, for quick access to more specialized "broader and narrower" topic links.
