OpenURL (Content Connection) support for multiple genres (books and articles) available now

The Content Connection page (openURL, Article Linker) now supports openURLs for multiple genres. This means that you will be getting different pages for books and articles. This happens because there are some searches such as ISSN that only work for articles in journals (which have ISSNs) and not for books (which have ISBNs).

You should see journal citations returning pages with ISSN searches. All other genres (books, proceedings, disserations, chapters) should lack an ISSN search in the catalogs (Homer, Helix, Advocat).

This is not fool proof. If you see any of the following:
  • You have a journal article citation but there is not ISSN search available for the catalogs.
  • You have a book citation (or other non-journal type) and there is an ISSN search.
or anything else that's odd on the Content Connection page, please send me the openURL (URL from the Content Connection page) the fullest record that you can get from the database which is the source of the citation used by the OpenURL. I'll contact Serials Solutions with the information so that they can work to fix this.

I will poll you all in a week and aks if you think that we should turn genre support off. This means that books would not be searchable in the catalogs because they would be doing periodical title searches.

Thanks.

  • Talk to Us - open the door for your colleagues by facilitating communication with Serials Solutions about instructions becoming available for a specific resource

Serials Solutions reports the service problems on Friday, March 10th

"All of our services have been running properly since Friday evening Pacific Time, and you should not be seeing more error messages. Please contact us at clients@serialssolutions.com if you continue to notice problems. I apologize for any inconvenience you or your patrons may have experienced.

Very briefly, the problem was that our Internet Service Provider had a technical problem which caused sporadic service interruptions on Friday, March 10. The sporadic nature of the problem meant that some clients did not see a problem at their library; on the other hand, because it was a problem at the ISP level, all of our hosted products were affected. We are working to ensure that this type of interruption doesn't happen again, and we are developing better methods of two-way communication so that you and we can alert each other to problems more promptly.

Thank you for your patience, and for allowing Serials Solutions to serve your library."

BIOSIS Previews Reloaded on Ovid

The reload of BIOSIS Previews on Ovid Gateway is now complete bringing significant enhancements for users.

Easy Lookup of Concept Codes – The new “Permuted Index Tool” enables users to successfully locate and display Concept Codes even when these do not begin with the search term entered. For example, a search for “proteins” will not simply display those terms beginning with “proteins” but will find other relevant terms such as “Biochemistry Methods – Proteins, Peptides and Amino Acids”.

In addition, the display now includes a click-through link from each phrase to its respective location within the topical hierarchy (tree) of these phrases to aid understanding.

Improved mapping to Subject Heading – The “Map Term to Subject Heading” option, used to match the search term with the BIOSIS controlled vocabulary, now displays all Subject Headings as text descriptors rather than numeric code as sometimes happened previously. So, for example, “10050” displays as “Biochemistry methods – General” making it far more comprehensible to users. Note, the numeric Concept Code, if entered, will continue to map to the textual description.

Author E-mail Index – The Author E-mail field has been indexed and is now fully searchable.
