JSTOR Content and Platform Update

New Content

We are pleased to announce the first journal to be released on the new JSTOR platform. The Wilson Bulletin was released today; institutions participating in the Life Sciences Collection or the Biological Sciences Collection will have access to this content immediately. The full details for the journal are:

The Wilson Bulletin (Biological Sciences Collection, Life Sciences Collection)
Release Content: Vols. 1-116, 1889-2004
Moving Wall: 3 years
Publisher: Wilson Ornithological Society
ISSN: 0043-5643

The Wilson Bulletin is the previous title to The Wilson Journal of Ornithology. The Wilson Journal of Ornithology will be released into the JSTOR archive in 2010.

JSTOR plans to release new content into the archives approximately every two weeks from June through August. While this initial release includes a single journal, subsequent releases will include multiple titles across disciplines and collections. As we approach the last quarter of the year, we will communicate an updated schedule for content releases for the remainder of 2008.

Platform Updates

Maintenance Update Scheduled for week of June 9

Since the release of the new JSTOR platform on April 4 we have issued several bug fixes and updates to the site, including the addition of a single citation export feature. Another maintenance update is scheduled for the middle of next week and is expected to include the following fixes:

  • The "Page of First Match" feature will be restored. With this fix, selecting the "Page of First Match" link will once again take users to the first page upon which a search term appears, rather than the first page of the article.
  • The ability to jump to search term locations by page will be restored. Users will see the "Your search term occurs on..." indicator at the top of each article page.
  • Thumbnail images on the "Images in JSTOR" tab will be restored
  • An error that caused difficulties with the Adobe Reader Find and Search functionality in downloaded PDFs will be corrected. This problem is currently prominent in some versions of Adobe Reader 7 and 8.
  • Several bugs with searching author names, phrase searching, wildcard searching, and fuzzy searching will be corrected.

We will send a confirmation of these changes on the day of the system update, along with a more detailed list of the fixes.

We very much appreciate all of the comments and suggestions that we have received since the launch of the new platform. We encourage you to continue to send your feedback and reports of any problems to JSTOR User Support at support@jstor.org. Over the coming months, JSTOR will be performing regular system updates along with development of new features and your feedback helps us to prioritize our work.

Future Updates

PDFs with OCR errors: Approximately 5-10% of PDF versions of articles in the JSTOR archives are currently missing supporting OCR coordinates and await reprocessing on the new platform. In the interim, users may encounter articles that do not contain search term highlighting, and the ability to copy and paste text from these articles is not functional. Please note that this issue affects *only* the downloaded PDF versions of these articles; the articles are still fully searchable via the JSTOR search forms and will appear in lists of search results.

Terms & Conditions pop-up boxes: We have heard directly from several librarians and users about the Terms & Conditions of Use pop-up that accompanies each PDF request. We recognize the frustration users are experiencing due to the frequency with which the pop-up appears, and we are looking at alternate options. We will keep you posted on the developments in this area. Users who register for MyJSTOR accounts may accept the Terms & Conditions of Use for all future sessions, but we understand that this is not an viable option for every user.

EZProxy Reminder

We discovered that certain features that were implemented with the launch of the new JSTOR platform on April 4 caused difficulties for some users whose institutions are using EZProxy for authentication purposes. Libraries and other sites that are using EZProxy and who are having difficulties may need to reconfigure settings as follows.

The JSTOR database definition should be:

Option DomainCookieOnly
Title JSTOR
URL http://www.jstor.org/
Domain jstor.org
Option Cookie

In addition, EZProxy must be explicitly configured to handle https. If https handling is not already set up, users will lose proxying when they arrive at the JSTOR login page, and the connection will be lost. If this is the case, SSL configuration must be performed using the information at:

http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/ezproxy/cfg/ssl/

Please continue to check the JSTOR System Updates page for news about open issues.

Project MUSE introduces linked subject headings

Users of Project MUSE articles and Tables of Contents in our recently-launched new format may have noticed an additional feature - "clickable" subject headings for each article, allowing fast and easy connections to related content in Project MUSE. Built upon the rich controlled vocabulary classification of all MUSE articles and reviews with Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) by our in-house professional cataloging staff, this new functionality quickly connects scholars to additional relevant content to enhance their research.
Linked subject headings are a powerful discovery tool for users. Following a subject heading link brings the user to an alphabetical listing of all current subject headings utilized for MUSE articles, with the selected heading as the entry point in the list. The researcher may then view additional articles that share the same subject heading, or peruse further articles with related headings. The list of subject headings is annotated with the current number of MUSE articles and reviews to which that heading is assigned.
One of the many benefits of the linked subject headings is the ability to refine a research topic when articles with a more specific focus are needed. Conversely, the linked subject headings can guide a user to articles with a broader approach when the assignment requires a more general discussion of the research topic.
MUSE has always assigned LC subject headings to articles to help users identify the topics discussed within an article and in turn, to select articles most suitable to their research. Now, by simply clicking on a subject heading, users can move from subject to subject, article to article, exploring topics and articles related to their search topic.
All MUSE articles and Tables of Contents produced since mid-April 2008 offer the new linked subject headings functionality; as older content is converted to the new format, the feature will also become available for archival articles, reviews, and Tables of Contents.

EBSCO Historical Abstracts and America: History & Life

As a follow-up to our September 20, 2007 announcement, the transition of America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts to the EBSCOhost interface will be completed on June 30, 2008. This means that all access to these databases will be supported only via EBSCOhost. If you are still using these databases via the ABC-CLIO platform, please begin to familiarize yourself and your end-users with EBSCOhost access as soon as possible.

We also plan to transition access to EBSCO Publishing's XML Web Service as of June 30, for federated search engine users. If you access America: History & Life and/or Historical Abstracts via federated search engines such as Innovative Interfaces, MetaLib, MuseGlobal, Serial Solutions, or WebFeat, note that EBSCO Publishing will be working with these vendors to establish connectors to EBSCO Publishing's XML Web Service. To ensure that your access to the databases will continue, and that your account is set up with the new connectors, please contact your federated search vendor directly.

In the event that you have developed independent "meta-search" solutions, please see our XML Web Service overview (http://supportforms.epnet.com/eit/webservice). EBSCO's Technical Support department is available to help you create the profile customization necessary to connect to these databases via EBSCO Publishing's XML Web Service.

Please visit EBSCO's Support Site (http://support.ebsco.com) to learn about all of EBSCO's products, search among thousands of FAQs, download Flash tutorials, Help Sheets or User Guides, or communicate with EBSCO's Technical Support Representatives online, via EBSCO's Support Form, or by telephone:
